(Open Calc) Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 Risk Test (ADA)
Background
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), once known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM), is a chronic condition that affects metabolism of glucose, the main source of fuel for the body
- In type 2 DM, the body either resists the effects of insulin, or doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level
- If left untreated, type 2 DM can be life-threatening
- There's currently no cure for type 2 DM, but it can be well managed by eating well, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight
- If diet and exercise don't control your blood sugar, you may need diabetes medications or insulin therapy
- Screening for type 2 DM is an important component of prevention
- This Risk Test is a quick and easy way from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to check the risk for developing type 2 DM
